It’s fascinating how a cereal that grows in a flooded land on the banks of a river ends up on our plates in the most varied forms of rice. On the “Discovering Lezíria” tour you will gain a better understanding of the incredible rice cycle, walk through bucolic pastures where farmers guide their cattle, and even get a close look at the mythical hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Alcamé. Depending on conditions, it may be possible to walk to the Salina de Zaragoza and from there to the Birdwatching and Visitation Area (EVOA), the ideal place to observe birds in their natural habitat.
The theme of the visit changes throughout the year, following the cycles and rhythms of the Lezíria. Between September and November it is possible to observe the rice harvesting campaign; from December to February thousands of birds can be seen in the rice fields; from March to April it is the endless water mirrors that enchant those who visit; from May to August it is possible to follow the rice growing and the cattle transhumance, with the possibility of observing the work done by the farmers on horseback.
