This is a private tour, tailored to the visitor’s interests, with guides who know where to look for what you want to see. “Dive” into the three lagoons and let yourself be transported by the birds to the distant territories where “the Tagus meets the World”. Some of the birds are resident at EVOA, and it is possible to observe them throughout the year, but the vast majority of the birds we receive are migratory. Between November and February, it is possible to observe thousands of birds from Northern Europe, which can be seen in flight or resting in the lagoons. In the months of March/April and August to October, the migratory passages of various species bring daily surprises to our lagoons, with peaks in diversity. In the months of May and June, it is the turn of the birds from the African continent, and as some species nest on the islands of the lagoons, it is possible to observe chicks of various species of ducks and waders. If you were told that it’s possible to observe birds, enjoy wine tastings, and witness cork extraction all on the same tour, would you believe it? Of course you would, especially if they were talking about the “Grand Tour by Companhia das Lezírias”! This adventure begins with a stop to observe flamingos painting the banks of the Tagus River pink, passes through the Catapereiro Winery for a memorable wine tasting, and arrives at the cork oak forest where, in addition to all the biodiversity you can admire, it’s possible (if it’s the right time of year) to see how cork is extracted from the trees. If the Lezíria suddenly turned pink, it would be…a flock of flamingos! A regular presence on the banks of the Tagus River, these birds search for food in the salt pans, while the wind sweeps the green of the rice paddies. We walked the Lezíria, step by step, to admire the imposing flock that, with one leg raised and the other straight, dipped their heads into the water in perfect balance, alternating their perch between the rice paddies, the salt pans, and the lagoons near the estuary. Flamingos are resident in the Tagus estuary; although they don’t nest there, they are imposing, large birds with a characteristic color. Throughout the year, the places these birds use vary. On this walk, we promise to look for flamingos everywhere in the Lezíria: in the rice paddies, the salt pans, the lagoons, near the estuary…. Meanwhile, we will take the opportunity to see many other species. More information
The Lezíria could very well be the owl capital! Some days you can spot more than 15 owls per kilometer! Studies show that the southern Lezíria of Vila Franca de Xira, with its open agricultural landscape and extensive network of ditches connected to the Tagus River, is probably the place in the world with the greatest abundance of owls and, therefore, the ideal place to come and see these mysterious birds. A less trained ear may have difficulty distinguishing them, but our host naturalist will clarify these and other mysteries, sometimes even creating veritable havens of biodiversity or attracting nocturnal butterflies to a white canvas.
