The theme of the tour varies throughout the year, following the cycles and rhythms of the floodplain: from September to November it’s possible to observe the rice harvest; from December to February we witness the natural spectacle of flocks of thousands of birds in the rice paddies; from March to April it’s possible to photograph bodies of water as far as the eye can see; and from May to August we follow the growth of the rice and the transhumance of the cattle, and there is the possibility of observing the work done by the campinos on horseback. If you were told that it’s possible to observe birds, enjoy wine tastings, and witness cork extraction all on the same tour, would you believe it? Of course you would, especially if they were talking about the “Grande Tour da Companhia das Lezírias”! This adventure begins with a stop to observe flamingos painting the banks of the Tagus River pink, passes through the Catapereiro Winery for a memorable wine tasting, and arrives at the cork oak forest where, in addition to all the biodiversity you can admire, it’s possible (if it’s the right time of year) to see how cork is extracted from the trees. There will be time for lunch near the Companhia das Lezírias Stud Farm, and from there, you’ll head to the Tagus estuary in search of more birds, passing through rice paddies, pastures with cattle, and Lusitano horses.
